Fix an "Early Release" or "Casting"
of the Club
 Problem:
The player early releases the club, resulting in fat shots, thin shots, and a loss of power.
Drill Setup:
Place a towel on the ground approximately 8 inches behind the ball. The thinner the towel the better. As you improve you can gradually move the towel closer.
Drilling Procedure:
If a player early releases the club, the clubhead gets prematurely low to the ground as it approaches the ball. This will cause one of two mishits. Either the club will hit the ground early, resulting in a fat shot, or the club will impact the ball on the upswing, causing thin shots. The goal of the drill is to strike irons shots without hitting the towel. Go through these steps.
- Simulate the impact position. You should have 80% of your weight on your forward leg, hips open, shoulders square, head slightly behind the ball, shaft leaning forward with a flat left wrist.
- Put tees in the ground, make swings and knock them out of the ground without hitting the towel.
- Start with a higher iron. Be sure to strike the ground after the golf ball, missing the towel. If you can consistently achieve this you are well on your way to improving your impact position.
