Cure the Shanks: "The Headcover Drill"
 Problem:
The player hits the heel of the club, causing a shank.
Drill Setup:
Place a range basket or a headcover just outside the toe of the golf club.
Drilling Procedure:
Curing the shanks can be more of a mental exercise than a physical one. Every golfer has hit a shank at some point and no one likes it. Hit enough of them and you may consider hanging up the clubs. Fellow golfers and teachers alike will give you a plethora of swing thoughts and drills to fix them, but you really only need to do one thing... groove a swing that misses the heel. Set a relatively soft object just to the outside of the ball and begin by striking tees, being sure to miss the range bucket or whatever you have chosen to use. Make this your only concern. As you have success, use a golf ball and do the same thing. If you miss the bucket, it is nearly impossible to shank the ball. Do enough of this and you will develop a feel for the correct swing. Execute this "feel" on the golf course and youÕve developed a "shank free" swing!
